About the Provider

Tammy Brady, MD, PhD, MHS, is a pediatric nephrologist and hypertension specialist who has focused her career on caring for individuals at increased cardiovascular disease risk through research and clinical innovation. In addition to her federally funded work in youth cardiovascular health promotion, she contributes to a global effort to reduce cardiovascular disease mortality through the international public health initiative Resolve to Save Lives.

Dr. Brady completed her undergraduate training at Boston College where she majored in psychology and philosophy. After receiving her medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine, she was a pediatric resident and then chief resident at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx, NY. During her fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, she received a Master’s in Health Science degree in clinical epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, followed by a doctorate in clinical investigation several years into her faculty appointment.

Dr. Brady came to Children’s National Hospital after 21 years at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). At JHU, she was a professor of pediatrics and epidemiology, and she served as the vice chair for clinical research, the deputy director of the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research, and the medical director of the Harriet Lane Kidney Center Pediatric Hypertension Program.

She is a recognized expert in blood pressure measurement and blood pressure device validation, serving on the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI)/ISO Sphygmomanometer committees and as co-chair of the American Medical Association’s Validated Device Listing Committee. She co-edited the 5th edition of the textbook, Pediatric Hypertension, contributing a chapter on blood pressure measurement. Her renown in the field has led to invitations to chair a meeting at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland focused on updating WHO guidance and specifications on blood pressure measuring devices, as well as invitations to speak at over 80 hospitals, universities and conferences in the United States and around the world.

At Children’s National, Dr. Brady brings her expertise and passion for cardiovascular health promotion to her role as the medical director of the pediatric Hypertension Program. She works closely with providers in the IDEAL Clinic to make things easier for children and families at greatest cardiovascular disease risk. She also serves as the director of hypertension and kidney health research and the director of the Grants Enhancement Program within the Center for Health Outcomes Research and Delivery Science.
