About the Provider

Steven L. Shein, MD, FCCM, earned his Bachelor’s degree as an Echols Scholar at the University of Virginia in 2001 and his Medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 2005, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his pediatrics residency at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital and his Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. 

Prior to joining Children’s National, Dr. Shein served as chief of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital. He oversaw the Pediatric ICU and Pediatric Sedation Unit service lines, co-directed the PICU Fellowship Program and the PICU Research Program, held the Linsalata Family Distinguished Chair in Pediatric Critical Care and Emergency Medicine and was a Professor of Pediatrics at Case Western. He also completed leadership training through the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs, among others. 

An accomplished researcher, he has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed manuscripts and numerous book chapters; co-founded BACON (Bronchiolitis: Advancing Care and Outcomes Network), the bronchiolitis research subgroup of PALISI—the largest PICU research collaborative in the world; and has been an invited expert for several national and international initiatives related to acute respiratory failure, including the second Pediatric Acute Lung Injury Consensus Conference and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ HIFLO project to reduce unnecessary high-flow nasal cannula use. His contributions have been recognized with election as a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine, designation as a University Hospitals Distinguished Physician and multiple Presidential Citations from the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
