About the Provider
Mikael Petrosyan, MD, MBA, is a distinguished pediatric surgeon and nationally recognized leader in general and thoracic surgery. He serves as chief of the Division of General and Thoracic Surgery at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he also holds key leadership roles as surgical director of Perioperative Services and program director of the Pediatric Surgery Fellowship. Academically, he is a professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences.
Dr. Petrosyan received his medical degree from Rosalind Franklin Chicago Medical School and completed his general surgery residency at Los Angeles County + University of Southern California. He went on to complete a pediatric surgery fellowship at Children’s National and later earned a Master of Business Administration from The George Washington University. He is board-certified in both General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
A pioneer in surgical innovation and program development, Dr. Petrosyan has led the creation of several multidisciplinary initiatives at Children’s National, including the Thoracic and Foregut Program and Chest Wall Deformities Program. His clinical and research interests focus on pediatric achalasia, minimally invasive foregut procedures, congenital chest wall anomalies, trauma and surgical education.
Dr. Petrosyan is a prolific academician with numerous peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters. His expertise has earned him recognition in major media outlets such as NPR, BBC and The Washington Post, where he has shared insights on pediatric trauma and health disparities.
Deeply committed to education and outreach, Dr. Petrosyan founded SURGUCATION, a widely followed YouTube and podcast platform designed to educate parents and caregivers about pediatric surgery. He also extends his impact globally as a surgical consultant and educator in Armenia.
