About the Provider
Mark L. Kovler is an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgery at Children’s National Hospital, where he provides expert surgical care for infants, children and adolescents. He specializes in using advanced minimally invasive techniques to treat a broad spectrum of pediatric conditions, including hernias, gastroesophageal reflux, chest wall deformities, congenital anomalies and appendicitis. Dr. Kovler also has a special focus on pediatric and adolescent bariatric surgery, serving as the director of Bariatric Surgery at Children's National, where he offers innovative and personalized care for young patients facing obesity-related health challenges.
Dr. Kovler completed his specialized pediatric surgery fellowship at Children's National. Prior to that, he trained in the distinguished general surgical residency program at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, which included a two-year NIH-funded research fellowship focused on neonatal intestinal disorders. He earned his medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine, graduating with distinction and being elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Kovler completed his undergraduate studies at Princeton University.
Dr. Kovler is actively engaged in research focused on improving the delivery of pediatric surgical care and enhancing outcomes for children. He is also deeply involved in the education and training of surgical residents and fellows, as well as in teaching and mentoring medical students. A native of Washington, D.C., Dr. Kovler is proud to bring his expertise to serving the local community, offering his dedication and commitment to patient care for children and families in the region.
