About the Provider

Gustavo Nino, MD, MS, MBA, currently occupies several leadership roles in clinical, education and research activities, including division chief, Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine and program director of the Sleep Medicine Fellowship at Children's National Hospital. Dr. Nino is a physician-scientist, ABP board-certified in pediatric pulmonology and sleep medicine and is a principal investigator in the Center for Genetic Medicine at the Children's National Research Institute. He is a professor with tenure in Pediatrics and Genomics and Precision Medicine at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Dr. Nino has authored over 100 publications and book chapters and is internationally recognized for his work in early-life airway immunity against viruses, respiratory disorders of prematurity, and the pathogenesis of severe obstructive sleep apnea in children. He has received several investigator distinctions from the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and the International Congress of Pediatric Pulmonology (CIPP). In addition, he was a recipient of the 2019 Robert Mellins Outstanding Achievement Award, the most important mid-career distinction from the Pediatric Assembly of the American Thoracic Society (ATS). His research laboratory has received multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) including the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. He has also been recognized as a "Top Doctor" by Northern Virginia Magazine in 2017 and 2018.

Dr. Nino is passionate about medical education. He has received faculty teaching awards in recognition for his mentorship/training of students, residents and fellows (he has had more than 40 mentees to date). He is a native of Colombia, South America, speaks Spanish, and loves Latin-American culture.
