About the Provider
Juma Mbwana, MD, is a child neurologist and medical director at Children's National, where he leads multidisciplinary teams across the Neurosciences Inpatient Unit, outpatient neurology clinics and ambulatory infusion services. He is also medical director of the Annapolis and Howard County regional clinics. He cares for children with a broad range of neurological disorders in both inpatient and outpatient settings, with clinical interests in epilepsy, medical informatics and improving healthcare delivery through systems innovation and operational excellence.
Dr. Mbwana earned his Bachelor of Science in biomedical engineering from Yale University and his medical degree from Morehouse School of Medicine. He completed his pediatric residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital before completing residency and fellowship training in child neurology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Mbwana has led numerous initiatives focused on improving quality, patient experience and operational performance across Children’s National. His scholarly work has focused on epilepsy informatics and the application of electronic health records and emerging technologies to improve neurological care. He has authored peer-reviewed publications in pediatric neurology and medical informatics, co-authored a book chapter on epilepsy informatics, and serves as an associate professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Mbwana is board certified in child neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
